A Plug and Why I Use It
Published on August 22, 2008 By kurtin In Customization Software

While I'm going to be away from my computer for a trip I need to take this weekend, one thing I'm going to miss is the trusty ObjectDock program from Stardock.  I've been using it for so long now it's just become a part of the way I compute.  If you were ever looking to change up your computer's appearance with a little improvement in functionality, try this program out!  There is a free version out there for you to try or a purchased version with even more features to enhance your desktop organization.

Basically, instead of pulling down the start menu to search for your folders, programs, settings, etc., you can place your most commonly used items in a dock so that with a simple "click" you're there!  Download/customize your icons for each individual program, utilize docklets like running clocks, weather indications, and more.  I use the program for not only its functionality, but also the unique visual appearances I can get with my desktop. I'm a guy that can't stand desktop icons cluttering up my display.  Even if they are nicely lined up in an array, my beautiful desktop images will be covered up by a document or a shortcut??!  This will not stand!!  You can stick your program docks on any part of your screen and even activate an auto-hide feature so you won't need to see it when not in use.

I'm in love with the customization features that go into this program and that talented skinners over at WinCustomize take the time to offer styles free for the public.  I can't stand working on PCs without any sort of docking device anymore because it is so useful and such a part of making my computing methods easier and more user friendly.  So this is my small plug to show my appreciation and hopefully direct more users to an amazing feature from the same providers as JU.  Check it out:

Hey! Come to think of it, there should be a way to combine Impuse Dock with OD!

WOW!

I simply could not live without it. I wouldn't know what to click. I have no icons, nothing on my start menu... without OD I can't do anything.

Next he'll dream up Fences,

You're too late. The merciless dev already dreamt it!
Fences turns out to be nothing less than evil itself. How come Jeff wrote such a useful app? I thought he only wanted to dominate the dock-using people, but now he's got an evil plan for desktop icon-loving folk as well! How dare he bring productivity to my system?

Why torture us, Jeff? Why?

Pix....I was being sarcastic....just got fences beta and am starting to play with it. The advantage so far is the "double click and it disappears" and reappears on demand. Let you know more as I work with it.

Jeff rules!

WOW! Fences is cool, ran into a minor snag with the Impulse shortcut I tried to put in the "Programs" Fence, but solved that one....was pretty strange for a while. I wonder how the little devil senses what's a file, a program etc. Probably Zubaz's DX scripting. Now I know why it messed up!

I wonder about Zubaz sometimes...here we are with Fences 0.9, and he has Fences 3.1.

Where'd he get that, I wonder.

OD is absolutely the greatest productivity app ever. Mine is so long that it probably covers atleast 2 full size 1280x1024 desktops

OD+ with tabbed docks / multiple docks per screen is a great solution to the problem of docks with too many icons in them.

Mirsguy +1

I have another zoomer with "infrequent apps" autohiding on the bottom of monitor 3.  No screen real estate wasted.  There in a flash if I do.

5 docks on three monitors...and yet...oh so clean and pretty!

OD+ FTW!

I know im going to get flamed for this but could anyone post a link to a site where i could actually download fences instead of having to sign up for a beta download? for some reason those things never make it to my email. For the windows 7 beta, i had to get my friend to get my product key for me because the email didnt make it. i signed up the day it came out, and i still havent gotten it.
